Local Maxima

Ark, the game under development by Elephant Laboratories, is now a really good game. Great, right? Yes, but there is a weird problem that crops up at this stage. I call it the Local Maxima. Imagine a topographical map where height represents fun, and distance represents different possible rule sets. The real challenge of this problem is, in order to make the game better now, it’s going get worse for a while. We must descend from our lofty heights to slog through the swamp of bad gameplay to reach a MIghtier Peak.

I am co-creator of the board game Sol: Last Days of a Star. I will talk about board games, design, and other stuff I enjoy. I'm always on the lookout for artists, app developers, and other designers. If that is you, say hi!

  1. Ah yes, the space of all possible games. Some day I hope to have a topographical map of this space…. maybe we will have to make one. Maybe that’s what we are doing!
